Celebrating Dr. Seuss' Birthday At Knee High Preschool

knee-high-preschool-hillsboroughAt Knee High Preschool in Hillsborough, we love Dr. Seuss! From Green Eggs and Ham to The Cat in the Hat, our preschoolers learn a love of reading through his whimsical storytelling style. This month, we celebrate Dr. Seuss' life and all he has done to teach kids life lessons, like how to be responsible, how to help the environment, or how to have fun being our unique, individual selves.

chapel-hill-preschoolHow Did Knee High Preschool Celebrate Dr. Seuss' Birthday?

We practiced our sight words and literacy skills by reading our favorite Dr. Seuss books! Plus, we made our own Cat in the Hat masks and some crafty hand print Thing 1 and Thing 2 artwork. We also did a fun math activity by printing out a full-size Cat in the Hat and measuring our own height against his.

Valentines Food & Art Project For Kids

A lot of people get hung up on the romantic aspect of Valentine's Day. But Valentine's is a day simply for expressing love and kindness of all sorts. It's also a great day to indulge in chocolate!

Teach your kids about healthy eating, while honing their fine motor and creative skills, by making these easy treats: Strawberry-Chocolate Love Bugs.

Knee High Preschool's Recipe For Valentine's Love Bugs

You'll need:
  • Strawberries
  • A bowl of melted chocolate
  • A tube of white frosting
  • Toothpicks
Let kids pick a strawberry. First, name your Love Bug. Is your Love Bug a boy or a girl? Where does your Love Bug live?

Next, let your child dip the tip of the strawberry into the chocolate (make sure it's cooled down a bit!). Your child can also use a toothpick to put dots of chocolate on the Love Bug's back.

Finally, once the chocolate hardens, allow your child to use the white frosting to create eyes for the bug. Encourage him or her to decorate the Love Bug carefully, adding creative flourishes as desired.
Thank you to SheKnows.com for this great idea!

Finally, enjoy eating your healthy snack together. Enjoy bonding with your extra special Valentine this year. Love is in the air.

Martin Luther King Day Acts Of Kindness

In honor of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, Knee High Preschool allowed students and families to remain home for the day. When we remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we are inspired by his kindness and commitment to improving our country. That’s why today we’re going to explore a couple of easy and fun ways to teach your preschooler about kindness.

1. Home Made Treats For Animal Shelters

Creating home made treats is a fun opportunity for a food and science project. Plus, it gives kids a chance to get a little messy for a good cause! Here’s a simple, no-bake, no-peanuts recipe.
          • 1 can of pumpkin puree
          • 1 container of plain oatmeal
          • honey
Mix a bit of honey into the pumpkin puree. Each child should get a dollop of the honey-pumpkin mixture and about two tablespoons of oats. Let the kids mold and squish the ingredients together. Drizzle a little honey on top of each, then refrigerate the bite-sized treats. Donate to a shelter. Some shelters will come pick the treats up and bring a furry friend along to visit the classroom.

Practice Giving Compliments During Circle Time

During circle time, play the “compliment game,” as we all learn about respecting and being kind to one another. The teacher starts with a spongy ball, then rolls it to someone in the circle. She must say something nice to that person. Then, that child chooses someone new to roll it to and thinks of a compliment or something they like about the recipient. Make sure no one gets left out!
